Mood:
This summer I've been on a roll: I'm spending my time more intentionally, surviving off-grid and with more consistent energy that I can direct towards building cool stuff and exciting character arcs. But my progress comes in waves. Energy and thoughts eventually dissipate until I naturally induce into a lazy, passive slumber. Like the hours are hauling me along through lethargic slush. These are the ways I jump start:
- Not doing exactly what you were readily about to do next. Meditate for 15 minutes and do absolutely nothing, not even thinking. The key is to halt the passive lazy inertia you've accumulated. Get back to stage 0: boringness, so you can start getting excited about exciting things.
- Say no to a "maybe" use of your time. Spell it out to your friend, and let them know exactly why you'd rather hang out with them intentionally instead of passively.
- Stay especially away from enjoyable pastimes. For me that includes piano, reading, and anime. When you're drowned in your own taste it's hard to sense for good/bad uses of your time. Make your pastimes intentional.
- Drink hella coffee/sugar. There is definitely a ceiling to this, but it's also definitely higher than you think. Obsession with your work develops faster than your obsession with coffee so it's probably a good sign to hit it anyways.
- Remind yourself with quotes: "How we spend our days, is, of course, how we spend our lives" - Annie Dillard
- Or, "The world will ask you who you are, and if you do not know, the world will tell you." - Carl Jung
- Observe doers. Surround yourself with them in fast-paced environments like college. Re watch the moon landing or JWST launch.
- Listen to Tame Impala, Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto, or Lose Yourself by Eminem.
